GENERAL RULES AND REGULATIONS

 

 

1.        All exhibits, except poultry, may be entered 2:00 - 6:00 p.m., Saturday, September 12th and 1:00 - 5:00 p.m., Sunday, September 13th.

 

2.        Poultry accepted from 1:00 - 5:00 p.m., Sunday, September 13th.

 

3.        Every reasonable effort will be made by the officers of the Sanford Lions Club and those in charge of the grounds to protect property or exhibits.  The Lions Club is not responsible should loss or damage occur.

 

4.        Duplicate exhibit tickets issued for each article entered serve as the claim check for pick‑up.  If lost, it will be necessary to prove ownership before item will be released.

 

5.        No article or exhibit can be removed temporarily or permanently until 6:00 p.m., Sunday, September 20th..

 

6.        The Sanford Lions Club will not be responsible for any exhibits not removed from the premises by 7:00 p.m., Sunday, September 20th.   Items not removed will be considered abandoned and may be disposed of as the Fair Chairman sees fit.

 

7.        All livestock and poultry must remain on exhibit through the close of the fair on Saturday night.  Livestock may be removed beginning at 8:00 am on Sunday, October 12th.  Sick animals will be removed immediately from the barn.

 

8.        Exhibitors may enter only one item per premium number.  The same article or animal cannot compete for the premiums of two or more premium numbers of the section in which it is exhibited and shall not be awarded more than one premium under the same number unless stated in the catalog.

 

9.        Judging will take place on Monday, October 6th by competent judges. All judges’ decisions are final. No exhibitors or visitors will be allowed in the exhibit hall while exhibits are being judged.

 

10.     Only products produced by the exhibitors will be eligible to compete for premiums.

 

11.     The Sanford Lions Club reserves the right to reject any exhibits, which are deemed objectionable or unsuitable for exhibition.

 

12.     The Sanford Lions Club reserves the final and absolute right to interpret these rules and regulations and to settle and determine all matters, questions and differences in regard thereto or otherwise arising out of them.

Mayor’s Choice Cookie Bake-Off

To be held Monday, October 6, 2008.  Open to youth in grades 3-12.  Registration begins at 4:45 at the Agricultural Exhibit Hall.  Cookies will be judged on appearance, texture, and flavor.  Recipe must be submitted as directed in the general rules. 10 points deducted if recipe is not submitted. Cookies made from scratch will earn 10 extra points.

 

Cake Bake-Off

To be held Tuesday, October 7, 2007. Registration begins at 5:30 at the Agricultural Exhibit Hall. Cakes will be judged on appearance, texture, and flavor.  Recipe must be submitted as directed in the general rules. 10 points deducted if recipe is not submitted. Cakes made from scratch will earn 10 extra points.

 

Chili Cook-Off

To be held Thursday, October 9, 2007.  Registration begins at 5:30 at the Agricultural Exhibit Hall. Chili will be judged on appearance, texture and taste. Temperature of chili at judging must read 140˚ F.  Crock-pots are the preferred container. Recipe must be submitted as directed in the general rules.  10 points deducted if recipe is not submitted.

 

Ice Cream Churn-Off

To be held Saturday, October 11, 2007.  Registration begins at 2:30 at the Agricultural Exhibit Hall. Ice Cream will be judged on firmness, texture & taste.  Recipe must be submitted as directed in the general rules. 10 points deducted if recipe is not submitted. No raw egg recipes allowed.  Ice and electricity will be provided by Lion’s. Salt and all other items needed to produce the ice cream must be provided by the contestant. Contestants will have 45 minutes to complete ice cream.

SECTION 1

 

EDUCATIONAL BOOTH EXHIBITS - AGRICULTURAL EXHIBIT HALL

 

Educational exhibits should show something of the economic, social, physical and recreational growth and development of the rural and urban communities. These exhibits should be designed so that they can be judged unmanned.   Booths must be reserved through North Carolina Cooperative Extension at 919-775-5624.

 

BOOTH RULES AND REGULATIONS

Lee Regional Fair

 

1.        Booths MUST have an educational message and not promote an organization.

 

2.        Contact North Carolina Cooperative Extension, 2420 Tramway Road, Sanford at (919) 775-5624, to reserve a  booth in the Agricultural Educational Exhibit Hall.

 

3.         Booths may not be manned and selling of raffle tickets is not allowed

 

4.      Each of the twenty booths is similar in size and construction, having concrete floor, suspended acoustic ceiling with fluorescent lighting, wooden back wall panels and wooden side partitions. Dimensions are 6 feet wide, 8.5 feet high and 8 feet 8 inches deep.

 

5.      120 VAC outlets are located on the back wall approximately 19 inches from the floor at random intervals. A few booths will not have an outlet within the booth itself, but will share an outlet with an adjoining booth.  This adjoining outlet will be within 1' of the partition and may be reached by running an extension cord under the partition.

 

6.      Displays must not extend over the side partitions or into the aisle.

 

7.      Displays may be fastened to the booth by mounting tape (masking, duct and double-sided tape will NOT hold all week), 1/4-inch staples, or small brads. No large nails or screws are permitted and nothing should be attached to the ceiling without first contacting the Exhibit Hall Manager.

 

8.      All tools, supplies, tables, chairs, stepladders or any other equipment needed to construct the booth must be provided by the exhibitor.

 

9.      Each group assigned a display booth must check-in with the Exhibit Hall Manager prior to set-up and provide the name and phone number of a person to contact in case of a problem.

 

10.    Each display booth must remain intact in place for the duration of the fair.    

 

11.    Each display booth must be cleaned up at the time of teardown and all materials and debris must be removed from the premises. All tape, staples and other fasteners must be removed from the partitions and from the back wall.

 

12.    Display booth set-up will be Saturday, October 4th from 10:00a.m.-1:00 p.m. and Sunday, October 5th from 10:00a.m.-1:00 p.m. Judging will take place Monday, October 6th. Teardown and removal of all materials must be started and completed on Sunday, October 12th from 3:00 - 7:00 p.m., NOT BEFORE.

Participation in these educational exhibits is open to adult non-profit organizations, which enhance the quality of life for Lee County. Exhibits must be educational and will be scored using the "Criteria for Judging Educational Exhibits", which is outlined in Section 1. Premiums will be awarded on the following scale for each exhibit and a participation ribbon will be awarded to each entrant.

LIVESTOCK

 

Exhibitors are responsible for feeding their animals and cleaning their pens daily.  The Sanford Lions Club will provide Hay.

 

3-A JUNIOR BEEF HEIFER SHOW

 

The purpose of the Junior Beef Heifer Show is to provide youth an opportunity to exhibit their heifers in a local show.  The following rules and regulations will be followed and conform to the rules for the Junior Beef Heifer Show at the North Carolina State Fair.  Many of these heifers will be exhibited at the North Carolina State Fair.

 

RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR JUNIOR BEEF HEIFER SHOW

 

1.        Open to youth exhibitors 5-19 (as of January 1, 2008) and North Carolina residents.

2.        Exhibitors must have trained and fitted the animals from August 15, 2008.  Ownership by exhibitors is not required.  However, in cases where exhibitors do not own the animal, a certificate of training and fitting from the owner is required at entry time.

3.        If an exhibitor has more than one entry per class, another junior exhibitor must show the additional animals. Adults are not eligible to show.

4.        Heifers must be halter broken.

5.        All breeds will be shown in one class.

6.        Classes will be divided based on age of heifer and will be announced on the day of the show.

7.        Heifers will be shown Wednesday, October 8th at 7:00 p.m.

8.        The Danish System of judging will be used.  A Grand Champion and Reserve Champion heifer will be picked.

9.        Take-in time, 4:00-6:00 pm.

RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR JUNIOR BEEF STEER SHOW

 

1.        All steers must arrive at the fairgrounds by 6:00pm, Tuesday, October 7th.

2.        Open to youth exhibitors 5-19 (as of January 1, 2008) and North Carolina residents.

3.        Steers must be weighed by 8:00 pm on Tuesday, October 7th.

4.        Exhibitors must have trained and fitted the steers from August 15, 2008

5.        Steers must weigh at least 800 pounds and can have two permanent teeth.  All other teeth must be baby teeth and in place.

6.        Steers must be halter broke and dehorned.  Unruly animals, which may endanger the safety of the exhibitors, will be asked to leave the ring.

7.        Each exhibitor is limited to two entries.  If animals are in the same class, another junior must show his animal.

8.        Classes will be divided by steer weighs (light, middle and heavy).  A Grand and Reserve Champion will be selected from the class winners and will auction at the end of the cattle show.  All other steers will receive market price (selected by show committee) and consignment add-on bids or may be taken home by the exhibitor.

9.        Steers will be shown Wednesday, October 8th at 7:00 p.m.

10.     Steer may be taken home at the end of the cattle show.

11.     If possible, Grand Champion Steer must stay for display until Sunday, October 12th.

3-D  MEAT GOAT SHOW

 

RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR MEAT GOAT SHOW

 

1.        Open to youth between the ages of five (5) and eighteen (18), and N.C. residents.

2.        Exhibitors limited to two (2) animals per species and one entry per class.

3.        Animals must be accompanied by an official health certificate signed by an accredited veterinarian or approved state or federally employed veterinarian.

4.        All goats must meet NCDA Scrapies regulations.  Those animals that do not will be asked to leave the fairgrounds!

5.        All participants are automatically entered in their respective showmanship classes.

6.        Thursday, October 9th: Wether weigh-in & doe check in 4:00p.m.-6:00p.m.

7.        All animals must be removed from the barn by 10:00 p.m. after the show.

8.        Market goat classes (wethers) will be divided by weight as evenly as possible

9.        Classes arranged at the discretion of the show officials

10.     Classes divided into the weight classes an hour before the show for market goats.

11.     Classes divided into breeding classes an hour before the show for breeding does.

3-F LEE COUNTY 4-H DOG SHOW

 

Shamrocks 4-H Club, sponsored by Lee County 4-H, will host a dog show at the Arena Barn on Saturday, October 11th at 1:00 p.m. Registration will begin at 12:30 p.m. Registration is limited to one dog per person. Owner must stay with dog at all times and all dogs must be on a leash. Owners must provide proof of their dog's current rabies vaccination at the Admission Gate. Dogs will only be allowed in the Livestock Barn. After the show, dogs must be returned to vehicles or home. Dogs will not be allowed to roam fairgrounds with owner, regardless of a leash. Only one individual will be admitted into the fair free of charge with the dog.

3-G LEE COUNTY 4-H HORSE SHOWMANSHIP DEMONSTRATION

 

Lemon Springs 4-H Horse Club will present a Horse Showmanship Demonstration Tuesday , October 7th at 7:30 pm to be held on the Ball Field. 3-H LEE COUNTY 4-H Animal Extravaganza

SECTION 4

 

 POULTRY & FOWL

 

4-A POULTRY

 

Exhibitors are encouraged to exhibit poultry and miscellaneous fowls that are of high quality and representative of the breed. The Danish System of judging will be used.  The breed should be indicated on the entry card. No bird can compete in more than one Show Class.  By law, all chickens and turkeys placed on exhibit in North Carolina that have not had a pullorum-typhoid test within the last 90 days must be tested prior to being placed on exhibit, and they must test negative. The Sanford Lions Club will pay for the cost of the tests, which is 6 cents per bird, with a minimum fee of $1.00 per exhibitor.  An agent from the North Carolina Department of Agriculture will be present on Sunday, October 5, 2008 from 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. to test each bird.  No bird can be entered for exhibit until it has tested negative.  Poultry exhibits will be accepted only between the stated hours.

 

*All birds must be picked up on Sunday, October 12, 2008 between 3:00pm – 7:00pm. 4-C JUNIOR BROILER SHOW

 

 

RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR JUNIOR BROILER SHOW

 

1.        Open to exhibitors under 19 years old on the day of the show.

2.        Exhibitors must make arrangements to receive their birds from Carrie Womack, Agriculture Teacher at Southern Lee High School.  Carrie can be reached at 919-718-2400 ext. 3240, or e-mail her at cwomack.sl@lee.k12.nc.us . Birds will be donated by Pilgrim’s Pride and must be picked up from Southern Lee High School’s Greenhouse from 3:30-5:00pm Wednesday, September 3, 2008. Space is limited, birds will be passed out to the first 150 applicants on a first come, first serve basis.

3.        Exhibitors can only enter three birds.  All birds must be on the grounds. Rejected broilers will be put in a separate pen.

4.        Birds need to be weighed at time of entry.  Average weight of a pen of three must average at least four and one half  (4.5) lbs.  Underweight pens of three will not be able to compete in the show.

5.        All birds will go to market. NO EXCEPTIONS.

6.        Birds must be in barn and weighed on Monday, October 6th between 2:45 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.

7.        Judging will take place on Tuesday, October 7th at 4:00 p.m. at the Arena Barn.

8.        Grand and Reserve Champion birds will be auctioned off at 8:00 p.m. or after the Livestock Show on Wednesday,

October 8, 2008.

9.        Grand and Reserve Champion birds must stay for display until Sunday afternoon.
